This is just an idea to provoke ideas about a
bicycle club in the Orangeburg area.
Metric Orangeburg Bicycles
the MOB
It's not farfetched to call the Orangeburg area a "Metro" area.
Definitions of "Metro" vary.
Among some that I came across have the theme of a city being a "hub" or
center of an area.
When young people move away from the smaller towns or when one wants to
do shopping etc.,
often Orangeburg is certainly a consideration.
This is one idea like many.
There was a town near the border of NC at one time calling themselves
the "Chain Gang".
A comical name or a name identifying the area is significant.
The rose is definitely a symbol of Orangeburg.
The deciding of the name of a group/club should be accepted popularly by
the cyclists involved.
Any club can be as small as needed or as large.
By the way the "OBurg" skyline is somewhat real.
I took a picture looking back toward Orangeburg from near Cordova and
traced the buildings that I saw.

As you can see with the above picture I substituted Major Taylor for the
soldier atop the obelisk.
There's no disrespect intended but only humor.
I have to admit I wish a statue of a cyclist was in the center of every
town or city.
The ghost riders in the foreground are actually riders from "6-day track
races".
One rider actually slings the "new "rider who is now part of the
"relay".
It appears that they are joined in friendship which is what I wanted to
convey.
It can also be interpreted as helping hands.
This is in alignment somewhat with the original hopes to help others in
the Orangeburg Community.
These are just ideas for a theme for a ride, a web-page, and a club for
better identifying "the ride".
Please come up with more and even better ideas.
Major Taylor is also a symbol of friendship among cyclists.
My intentions are to form a club somewhere in SC that is a Major Taylor
affiliate club.
To do so only require a $250 payment to the Major Taylor Foundation.
The "Orangeburg area club" may be only for establishing the Orangeburg
Century or not.
And perhaps more thought is needed on all counts.

A webpage for the ride could resemble this page with a different
web-master-designer altogether.
Maybe less clutter.
Just some ideas.
Happy trails, Michael
Below is a map of roads I've researched recently.
Highway 70 (yellow west of Denmark) and to Orangeburg is a mistake.
I missed my turn onto 26. This is southwest of Denmark.
The green and yellow dots refer to the correct road I should have taken-
26.

The purple road was one I was hoping to add some mileage with but alas
it was dirt on the north side of 64.
I denoted this road with purple dots.
The orange dots going northwest of Ehrhardt are part of my attempt at a
metric century (62 miles).
Alas again, my route accumulated 20 extra miles for a total of 82 miles.
Back to the drawing board on this one as well.

Most items below are on the wish list.
Some are needs, some are "wants".
Needs for the bike rides:
Police escort out of town to Cordova road perhaps.
Motorcycles leading the lead group, blocking intersections as the riders
turn corners.
police or firemen at dangerous/busy intersections.
Maybe 5 rest stops for the century (100) hopefully serving the metric
ride as well.
One rest stop in Bamberg could be the stop twice for the century and
maybe twice for the metric.
Porta-johns or bathrooms should be at rest stops.
Water barrels (dispensers). This may be an initial investment that will
be of use for many years.
Water, a drink like "gatorade", bananas, maybe cookies or muffins, etc.
Cue sheets (maps).
T-shirt.
Meal afterward (?).
Orangeburg is the area for BBQ and peanuts.
The incredible peanut ride?
Orangeburgers?
Any theme might do.
Showers (?).
At the Cherohala Challenge and Blue Ridge Brutal
had a contraption that was water coming out of pipes that could be
turned on with a faucet handle.
It was in the open. Riders "hosed themselves off in the open.
Several Porta-Johns or bathrooms available at the start/finish.
Porta-Johns or bathrooms available at some rest stops.
Turns on the road painted with arrows. 2, 3, or more arrows before some
turns.
One confirmation arrow after the turn.
An account should be set up with Active.com. Such as below for the Roan
Moan:
This is some of the best advertising that's inexpensive for the results:

The "hard-copy" brochure may look as the one below.
The outside of the brochure is first of course.

I've rotated the sides of the brochure so that more compatible with more
computer screens.

Below are links to better learn about Orangeburg and even lower are
rides that have been ridden in the OB area.
These could be on an information page explaining/describing the routes.
Some "ride" pages have been damaged a bit but try to see them at some
point. I am repairing them. |
